24 Tattvas of Gayatri[edit]

The 24 Letters of Gayatri mantra represent 24 Tattvas.[23] They are

  1. Five Bhūtas, namely, pṛthivi (Earth), apas (Water), agni (Fire), vāyu (Air) and ākāśa (Sky).
  2. Five Tanmātras, namely, gandha (smell), rasa (taste), rūpa (form), sparśa (touch) and śabda (sound).
  3. Five Karmendriyas (i.e. motor organs), namely, upasthā (sexual organ), pāyu (anus), pāda (leg), pāni (hand) and vāk (mouth).
  4. Five Jñānendriyas (i.e. sense organs), namely, ghrāna (nose), jihvā (tongue), caksus (eye), tvak (skin) and śrotra (ear).
  5. Four Vāyus (air), namely, Prāṇa, Apāna, Vyāna and Samāna

However, in classical definition of 24 tattvas, the last four are the antahkaranas (i.e. sense organs), namely, manas (mind), buddhi (intellect), citta (state of mind) and ahaṅkāra (ego).

When Prakti comes into contact with Purusha this balance is disturbed, and Prakriti becomes manifest, evolving twenty-three tattvas, namely intellect (buddhi, mahat), ego (ahamkara), mind (manas); the five sensory capacities known as ears, skin, eyes, tongue and nose; the five action capacities known as hasta, pada, bak, anus, and upastha; and the five "subtle elements" or "modes of sensory content" (tanmatras), from which the five "gross elements" or "forms of perceptual objects" (earth, water, fire, air and space) emerge, in turn giving rise to the manifestation of sensory experience and cognition.

Shri SripAdarAja tirtaru

·      SripAdarAjaru bAla sanyasi.  He took sanyasa at the age of 8 years and lived for 100 years.  He came under Shri PadmanAbha tirtara MutTha.  He is remembered for the spread of Madhwa siddAnta.  He was elder than vAdirAja tirtaru.   

·      When he was just 6 years old, yeti asked him how far is Abbur.  He answered him that looking at the sun and cows he was grazing he can find out the distance.  Yeti  became very happy.  He asked his parents to give the boy to him.  He was made sanyasi and he is named as Lakshminarayana tirta.  In Kopra kshetra, Sudhindra tirtaru  became SripAdarAjatirta.   Sukha prabdha raja yoga, abyanjana snana, 60 types of vegetables for nyvedya to Bhagavanta were his specialities.  .   Whatever he ate he took it out from his tapas shakti.  He Tatva jnana is equivalent to science because of yoga shakti.    This was his Mahime.  He stopped Corruption in Tirupati.  Raja took action.  By sprinkling  teerta on Shanka on two black clothes he   demonstrated the power of Shankodaka prokshane by showing that the shanka prokshane on one set of black cloth becoming white, whereas the other set of black cloth remained black  in spite of washing in  all religious places.    Raja became happy.  V Vyasarajaru   was sent to Tirupati.   VyAsarAjaru worshipped Lord SrinivAsa for 12 years.    He made a very good vyavaste in Tirupati.  Ratnabisheka was done by him.  Tatva prasaara and  daasara sahitya were spread during his time.   NARASIMHA SMARANE  STOTRA OF NARASIMHA AND   MADHVA NAAMA ARE  JAGAT PRASIDDDA.     SULADI UGHABHOGA ,  NAANDI FOR SAHITYA

He is responsible for the construction of the 8 Maths in Udipi.  The Krishna Temple had 8 rooms.  That temple is now known as Krishna Math which has 7 rooms now. Vadirajaru asked the Matadipatis to choose their Maths.  In the end the last one was left to him which was situated in Agneya direction.  It is said that during Rathothsava, it is auspicious to see the Uthsava Murthy when the Ratha turns towards South.  Sode Mata is situated there only where one can see the Lord Krishna during Rathotsava. Due to his sacrifice, he got the best place to see the Lord during the Rathothsava.  He converted the period of paryaya from 2months to 2 years.

 

If one believes that GOD is present in the body itself, then there is no rebirth.

 

He has made innumerable stotras.

 

When he was in Prayaga, he made a stotra praising Vedavyasa Devaru.  Vedavyasa Devaru appeared in front of him.  The shloka starts as “Vyasaya…………..thubyam namaha”.  This shloka gives vidya and buddhi.

 

In Gokarna, an old man by name Atmadeva was daily reading the dashama skanda of Bhagavatha.  Vadiraja’s “kavikadamba kantabusha” contains 15 shlokas.  If this is read it covers the dashama skanda of Bhagavatha.  If this is read daily, it is said that one will reach the feet of GOD.

 

He made Durga stotra to get rid of kama, kroda, enemies botheration.  It contains 15 shlokas. When Vadirajaru made this stotra, it seems Durga Devi appeared in front of him.

 

When Achutharaya was ruling Vijayanagara, he had taken too much of loan which he could not clear, Vadirajaru made the stotra of “Shrishaguna darpana”.  This is the story on Laksminarayana.  From this Achutaraya got back his wealth.

 

He made “madvashtaka” stotra to relieve from fever.  This was experienced by one Yethi by name Krishna Yethi who was blessed with stotra of Vadirajaru in his dream when he was suffering from fever.  He got rid of the fever.  This stotra is based on Vayu Devaru.

 

He has made stotra on Bhimasena Devaru to get rid of “arishadvarga”.

 

Keechaka’s killing by Bheema represents the removal of passion (kama).

Killing of Dushyasana by Bheema represents the removal of angriness (kroda).

Killing of Duryodhana by Bheema represents the removal of miserliness,(lobha).  Duryodhana was not willing to part with just 5 gramas to Pandavas.

Killing of Bakasura by Bheema represents the removal of egoism (durahankara).

Killing of Jarasandha represents the removal of jealousy. (mathsarya, asuye).

(When the Princess Kashi, the avatara of Droupadi, during ‘Kashi Swayamvara” puts the garland on Bheema, Jarasandha argues with Bheema that he should not have accepted the garland.  Then Bhima fights with him and takes him to the Ganga river and dips him in the river Ganga three times.  Jarasandha had not taken bath in the river Ganga as he was a Shiva Baktha.  He had thought that the river Ganga has started flowing from the feet of Vishnu and he had believed that “Shiva sarvothama” and hence he had not taken bath in the river Ganga.  He was a hater of Lord Krishna.  That is why Bhima dipped him in the river Ganga before killing him.)

 

He has made a stotra on Udipi Krishna to get back the eye sight.

 

To get rid of fear, he has made a stotra which stats from “Abhiyastavara….”

It contains 10 shlokas wherein he has given the illustrations of :1) Dhruva2) Bali 3) immersion of Mandara Parvatha 4) Rudra 5) Daksha 6) Draupadi 7) Ashwathama 8) Sanjeevani  9) Narasimha-Prahlada                 10) Ajamila.

 

In old age, the disturbance in mind will be more.  To get rid of it also he has made stotra  containing 15 shlokas.

 

He has made “navagraha stotra to get rid of graham peede.

 

He has made “shanimani stotra” to get rid of shani kaata.

 

He has illustrated “runamochana stotra” from Narasimha Purana which contains 9 shlokas.

 

If one has not succeeded in vyavahara he has given one shloka for that also.

 

If one is suffering from tiredness he has given a stotra containing 10 shlokas.

 

For getting rid of obstacles also he has given one shloka.

 

“Proshtitha Vigraha-----------------“stotra should be sung after the puje.

 

In Ramayana, Rama kills Vali by hiding behind a tree.  Rama had promised Sugreeva that he will kill Vali.  As Vali’s was Indra avathara, Rama could not kill in front of him, because he would recognize Rama.  Rama asks Vali whether he would want to be alive.  Rama would have given him re-birth if Vali had agreed.  But Vali would have to live without any strength to fight with Sugreeva.  But Vali does not agree for that and he says that he is willing to die in front of Rama.  Hence Rama killed Vali by hiding behind a tree.  Vadirajaru analyses like this.

 

Madwacharya had told that Bhagavantha in the Vamana avatar with the image of Trivikrama grabbed the three lokas from Bali Chakravarthi by deceiving him.

Vadirajaru argues that if we say that Bhagavantha deceived Bali Chakaravathi it amounts to say that Bhagavantha had durguna.  He answers as follows:  As Vamana, Bhagavantha requested Bali chakravarthi.  He grew as Trivikrama and measured the loka with his feet.  Bali Chakravarthi pleads that Bhagavantha had deceived him.  But Bhagavantha tells him that he did not deceive him but he had told him that he is going to measure the loka from his feet, and it is you who is deceived and it is your foolishness only.  This is how Vadirajaru clarifies this doubt.

 

Once there was a Brahmin by name Dwaraki whose newly born baby was disappearing every time Arjuna promises him to save his new born baby.  But he could not succeed.  Then Krishna takes both Arjuna and the Brahmin in his Ratha towards North side to see the new born baby according to Madwacharya in Thathparya Nirnaya. But Vyasarajaru had written that Krishna went towards West direction.   Vadirajaru interprets that Krishna went towards the North-West (Vayavya) direction in search of the new born baby.   He asserts this by saying that Ananthasana is situated in the North-West direction from the Meru Parvatha.

 

Vaikunta has 7 forts. The doors are in the four directions.  After crossing these doors, Viraja river (nadi) can be seen.  After crossing the Viraja River, Ayodhya can be seen.  In the middle of Ayodhya, Bhagavantha resides.  Jaya Vijaya were guarding the 7th fort.  After crossing the fort, Viraja river can be seen.  After Viraja river Ayodya City(Pattana) is situated.  Viraja river is inside the Brahmanda.  Viraja river means Lakshmidevi.  Lakshmi Devi will be present in the Viraja river which is the sweating water of Lakshmidevi.  In Viraja river linga deha is destroyed.  This can happen to only satvik(good) people.  Bad people (thamoguna) cannot have bath in Viraja river.   From there one goes to Moksha with swarupa Deha.

Sri Vijayeendra Tirtharu

(1575c-1614c)

·       The 16th century is considered as Suvarna yuga.   Shri Madhwacharya’s period was vajra yuga.  In 16th century we come across great scholars (maha jNanigalu) like RaghOtama tirtharu,  Vyasarajaru, Vaadirajaru, Purandaradasaru, Kanakadasaru.  Vedanta and the way of life   were inseparable in those days.

·         When Vyasarajaru was about 50 years old and while traveling places, an old childless couple with over 70 years prostrated to him. He blessed them saying “putravatibava” and told them that the child should be handed over to him.  Surprisingly within a year couple were blessed with a child.  This is the indication to believe in God.  The child was named as Vitthalacharya.  The child was handed over to Sri Vyasarajaru.   At the age of 5 years his upanayana was done.  At the age of 8 years he became SanyAsi and he was named as Vishnu tirtha.  Vyasarajaru made him a VidvAmsa.  As Vishnu tirtha, he learnt “Sarvamoola grantha” six times and “Nyaya Sudha” 9 times from Shri VyAsarAjaru.  VyAsarAjaru made him a great Tapasvi.  VyAsarAjaru made him proficient in 64 Arts.

·        Surendra tirtharu came to Vijayanagar during his sanchAra.  He saw a Tulasi vana and said “KrishNArpanamastu”which means that all the tulasi  in the vana were offered to  Bhagavanta..  He had travelled around Bharat 3 times with fasting.    At that time VyAsarAjara Shishya took Tulasi from the vana and gave it VyAsarAjaru for offering to Bhagavanta.    VyAsarAru told that the tulasi brought from him is “nirmalya” tulasi (meaning already offered to Bhagavanta).  What a gereat jNani was vyAsarAjaru.  Shishya was surprised and said that he had brought the tulasi straight from the vana.  VyAsarAjaru then invited Surendra tirtha to his place.

·       Seeing VishNu tirtha there Surendra tirtharu decided to take him to his Mutt. VyAsarAjaru was happy to give VishNu thirtharu to Surendra thirtharu.  ((In Hampi during the excavation “Surendra Mutt” Board has been found it seems) . Surendra tirtharu named VishNu tirtha as Vijayeendra tirtha.

·       At that time M.A. Basavarajendra (Lingarajendra) was a very popular Shaiva Sanyasi in KumbakOnam (Tamilnadu).  He was good in vAmachAra also.  He was converting people to Shaiva community with compulsion.    KumbakOnam was a great Kshetra.  SArangapAni as VishNu temple and Kumbeshwara as Shiva temple.

·        A meeting was arranged for Vijayeendra tirtharu and Basavarajendra.   To show his greatness Basavarajendra sat on a small wall and the wall started flying over the place and came down.  Seeing this Vijayeendra tirtharu smiled and made the Mene to fly over the wall where Basavarajendra sitting.  A debate was arranged between them with a betting that whoever lose in the debate must surrender to the winner and become his Shishya.  In the debate Basavarajrndra was defeated by Viayeendra tirtharu and he had to surrender all the property and left the place.

·         Once when a Dombara showed his skill of walking on a rope, Vijayeendra tirtharu by his yoga shakti walked on bAlenaru and surprised  the dombara.    That is the spiritual spirt he had. 

·      Once when a prostitute was shown to him, he made his Shishya to hit her with a flower bunch which made her to leave her profession.  He was creating this type of parivartana by his skill.  This was the saatvika mahime of Vijayeendra tirtharu.     

·      Another one who was making sculptors wanted to test Vijayeendra tirtha.  But making so many Pratimes he showed his skill and surprised him.

·       A hAvADiga wanted to test Vijayeendra tirtha.   Vijayendra tirtharu showed him that he can play with snakes by playing on flute through   Adyatma vidye.  He left one special sarpa. A line was drawn by Vijayeendra tirtharu.  It could not cross that line and went towards hAvADiga.  Then hAvADiga surrendered to Vijayeendra tirtharu.  Vijayeendra tirtharu  through his yOga shakti  made a Garuda to come there and to take the  the sarpa away from there..    That place is called garuDa tirtha which  can be seen even now in KumbakOnam.

·      A weaver from Kashmir challenged Vijaya tirtha to make a similar shawl  that he had done.  To his surprise Vijaya tirtha weaved a shawl  which was superior than the shawl shown by the Kashmiri.

·       Another fellow challenged Vijayeendra tirtha to take  abyanjana by tripura sundari Vijayeendra tirtharu   concentrated on Narayana stutiand was not disturbed in any way.

·        When Appayyadixit a prominent shivist  said that nArAyaNi is the wife of nArAyaNa ,Vijayeendra tirtha answered him that  mahishi (princes) is the wife of mahisha (kONa).

·      Vijayeendra tirtha has  written 104 granthas.  102 granthas are available and 35 granthas are printed.

·       When  poison was mixed in  milk, he drank it as  Devara Prasad by offering Narasimha shloka.  This is  practical siddanta.
